first impression at the officeFirst impressions count more than you think. The first conversation you have with your co-workers and your bosses leave a lasting impression. If you want to succeed in the office, you must impress your peers right from the start. Here are some tips on making a good impression on your first day in the office.

Practice a 30-second introduction

You might be nervous on your first day, so it’s important to be prepared. Your colleagues will want to get to know you and will be asking plenty of questions. Spend some time the night before preparing what you want to say and how you want to introduce yourself.

Dress for success

First impressions begin before you even speak a word. Your attire is the first thing someone will notice. Make sure you are dressed in proper clothing, depending on your company dress code. If you don’t know the dress code, be sure to ask before arriving to work on day 1. Also, wear something that you feel confident in. Being uncomfortable in the clothing that you wear will affect your mindset throughout the entire day.

Maintain eye-contact & have a firm handshake

You want to radiate confidence on your first day at work, and these two things are simple and effective. Aside from confidence, they also demonstrate professionalism and maturity. Plus, eye-contact will help reassure your colleagues that you are actively listening to them throughout the conversation.

Don’t be the last one to arrive or the first one to leave

This is the most important tip. Show that you are eager and determined, and that you want to succeed on the job. Being the last to arrive and the first to leave gives the impression that you only care to do the bare minimum that is required. It is especially important during your first week in the office that you put in the time and work to prove to your bosses that they made the right decision in hiring you.
